Now back to this week's insights.. I want to ask you, Reader, have you seen the movie, "Everything Everywhere All At Once?" If you haven't, it's weird! If you have, please reply and tell me I'm not the only one! I didn't finish it (ok so I could have completely missed the point by not watching the whole thing - feel free to enlighten me). What I did get out of it, though, is that it is a hectic, makes-no-sense, blurry whirlwind metaphor for how life can really be for us. Now, I'm a lover of metaphors to make explanations of human behaviour and mindset tangible, and for some reason, recently became curious about this movie and what the point was, so I did a little research. To cut a long story short it's about how the different life choices of the main character Evelyn, played by Michelle Yeoh (what a woman!), created alternate universes called a Multiverse. (Yeah, it's a little sci-fi, but hang in there with me.) In this Multiverse, all the different versions of Evelyn were trying to eliminate themselves, and the people in her life closest to her with whom she had fractured relationships. Her husband wanted to divorce her, her daughter wasn't speaking to her, her elderly father was visiting, and the IRS was investigating their business. The movie has lots of fighting and action, and kung fu, etc. It's colourful, loud, and everything moves fast. It almost gave me vertigo. Srsly, how do people come up with this stuff? Evelyn eventually has an epiphany and realises if she is forgiving and empathetic it puts things right in all the alternate universes and repairs her broken relationships to find peace, and the IRS gives them a break. Pretty powerful stuff is forgiveness and empathy. Imagine how many wars would end if the people in powerful political positions focused on being compassionate. Ok so that likely won't happen, but a girl can dream. At least, we can start at home. My point is, Reader, to live through resentment, revenge, judgement, and anger is hurtful. For us, and the target. It creates a multiverse of stingy reactions and impulsive behaviours that will never put things right. Try this exercise I teach my clients and in my Resolve course next time you have the urge to spit something spicy out of your mouth at someone. It's called The Chair of Compassion:
By practicing this mindset reframe when communicating, you will have a more positive impact on your relationships. Personal, and professional. You will also give your body a break from being in fight or flight. Consider what your multiverse currently looks like, and how you'd like to find peace. Speaking of, have you downloaded the free meditation I created? It's a quick 9 minute practice with music to help you feel relaxed. You can grab it here. Feel free to share the link with anyone you feel may benefit from it. Here's to your peaceful universe, Reader. Chat soon. Love, Ali x PS; Order the book.
