"A stress response in the short term can be helpful when we need to get something done, need to get somewhere on time, or are faced with an emergency. We spring into action and move fast without much conscious thought. This is known as ‘flight.’
In cases of an argument or confrontation, when the brain detects the lion some people’s response is to become reactive and angry. This is known as ‘fight.’ They need to be right and gain control to feel safe.
Many other people, however, shut down, walk away, and go silent. This is known as ‘freeze.’ Their nervous system has received the message that it’s better to avoid the situation and shut down.
Then there are those who will do anything to try and defuse an argument, or feel it’s their fault, and try to please the other person at their own expense. This is known as ‘fawn.’
In all these situations, hormones and neurotransmitters are released that prompt a physiological response. The most commonly known are adrenaline and cortisol..."
